Welcome to the official website of Movement for an Independent Somaliland (MIS), a grassroots organization committed to gaining the Republic of Somaliland full diplomatic recognition. Although few people have heard of it, Somaliland is a stable and democratic country in East Africa that, despite being entirely self-governed since 1991, is still considered by the international community to be a part of the failed state of Somalia. Unlike Somalia proper, however, which is infamous for its piracy and violence, Somaliland is one of the most peaceful and well-governed states in Africa, and boasts many impressive accomplishments, including having democratically elected all of its governments since 1993.

This website is dedicated to raising awareness of the Republic of Somaliland, promoting the cause of its international recognition, and generally supporting its progress as a nation. In the links above, one can find general information about Somaliland, including an overview of the country and its current situation, as well as a detailed history of the republic and its origins. On the right, one can find specific information as to how to support Somaliland. On this page, we provide news on Somaliland and MIS.

Ethiopia and Somaliland seek EU funding for increased economic integration

Ethiopia is hoping to renovate the road that links it to Somaliland's port of Berbera and it wants EU funding to do so.

Ethiopia is a landlocked country and currently suffers from an overdependence on a single port, the port of Djibouti (located in the country of Djibouti). Unlike Somaliland, Djibouti is an authoritarian state and, as a result, Ethiopian access to the port of Djibouti is constantly jeapardized by political unrest.

Thus Ethiopia has a lot to gain by increasing the amount of exports and imports flowing through its democratic neighbor, Somaliland.
